Setting Business Goals
The setting of businesses goals is so important. If the question 'how is your business performing? doesn't provide a clear answer, then chances are goals haven't been set.
Set Clear Business Goals
When you drive somewhere, you're not aimlessly driving in a directionless way; you're on a route with an end destination. You either arrive at that destination, or you don't. Setting a business goal is just the same; it's a target (or series of targets) that you're working hard to reach.
Simple Planning
If this is all sounds straightforward, that is because it is. However, it's surprising how many businesses don't have a plan or targets. Once you know your annual target, which could be financial, you can measure progress throughout the year.
Business Measures
I encourage business owners to look not just at revenue but a more rounded set of measures, including customer satisfaction surveys, staff retention, customer acquisition, marketing results, profitability etc. All of these critical measures will influence the overall business goal.
Stay on Track
It is so much easier to precisely know how you are doing and whether the business is on track to achieve goals. The key measures will keep a sense of focus throughout the year and help you and the staff not get distracted by outside influences such as competition.
Celebrate Success
My final piece of advice is once you have set up your annual goals that are hopefully challenging but achievable and are measuring them through the year, you celebrate success when you achieve them!
